Printable wood available

2PrintBeta proudly presents: Printable Wood !

Laywoo-d3 is a filament which consists of 60% wood powder and of 40% plastic. It comes directly from the inventor Kai Parthy who especially designed Laywoo-d3 for 3D printers. When printed it can be drilled, sanded or painted like wood.

The ideal printing temperature is between 180°C and 230°C. By variation of the printing temperature one can change the color of the filament to make it lighter or darker.

You can see some examples here:

The lighter sections of the woman toros where printed with 190°C and the darker ones with 220°C.

The filament prints really nicely, has no problems with wrapping and the rough texture of the filament makes sure it has a good grip in the extruder. While printing it smells like you are in a wood workshop. Lovely.

You can get it in our shop here.

Hmm - reckon you could create a reasonably realistic wood grain effect by carefully varying temperature and hence hue during layer deposition?

Hm, i am not sure if that is possible. The size of any hue variation is limited on how fast you can change the temperature.
But with some cracy software to calculate the needed temperature changes it might be possible.

Well, that's exactly what I did -- check my blog spot & plugin "Shades of brown with wood filament". It creates a color texture in the Z axis that give very nice results.

However it fails for the X/Y plane specifically because of the large heat inertia of the hot end. IMHO, a "quick" and tiny head may work, else extremely reduced speeds would be needed.
